# GEO Evidence Before Gimmicks: Measure AI Search Outcomes

## Excerpt

AI visibility is not a business outcome. Australian SMBs should measure discovery, citations, clicks and enquiries separately before changing a website for AI search.

## Why Is AI Visibility Not a Business Outcome?

An AI-search mention can be a useful signal, but it does not show whether a prospective customer reached the right page, understood the claim or took the next step. Ahrefs notes a growing demand for AI-search tracking while making the key distinction: a citation matters commercially only when it can be connected to visits and conversions.

## What Does the Current GEO Evidence Support?

A July 2026 critical survey reviewed 45 GEO studies. It finds that changes can affect how content is cited after it is already in an answer system's context, but no generic technique has shown a stable, longitudinal, cross-platform causal effect on organic discovery or downstream behaviour.

> Treat discovery, citation, click and enquiry as different signals. A visibility score is not a commercial result.

## Which Four Signals Should You Track?

1. **Discovery** — whether a realistic customer question finds your page.
2. **Citation quality** — whether the cited page is relevant and supports the answer.
3. **Click** — whether analytics can associate a visit with the source or landing page.
4. **Business action** — whether the visit contributes to an enquiry, call, booking, purchase or other agreed conversion.

Microsoft's AI Visibility Insights similarly separates intents, topics, citation share and comparisons rather than relying on one number.

## How Can You Run a Small Controlled Test?

Use ten real customer questions across brand, service and comparison intent. In two AI-search interfaces, record the exact wording, date, relevant location or login state, whether web search was active, the cited page and whether it supports the answer. Repeat after a week, then compare with landing-page traffic and conversions.

Keep the old page version and change one variable at a time. This makes a result interpretable instead of merely interesting.

## What Should You Improve First?

* Make service scope, conditions, dates and sources easy to locate in crawlable HTML.
* Use clear headings and internal links around important claims.
* Put a clear next action on pages likely to be cited.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is GEO measurement?

It records whether AI systems find a page, cite an appropriate source, send a visitor and contribute to a real business action.

### Should a small business rewrite every page for AI search?

No. Start with a controlled test, preserve the current version and compare the same questions and business signals over time.

### Which questions should an AI-search test include?

Use a small set of real customer questions across brand, service and comparison intent, keeping the wording, date, engine, setting and cited page.
